Lithium-Ion Trade-Offs (pdf, 370 KB)

This document summarizes some of the benefits and risks of lithium-ion batteries that are presented in The Science of Extraction to E-waste. It prompts students to weigh these risks.

Context

When we weigh benefits and challenges, we decide what is acceptable risk. These are called trade-offs. Lithium-ion batteries answer the growing demand for portable and renewable energy, but where do they come from? How are they made? How are they safely transported? And, what happens to the batteries when we’re done with them? Consider the benefits and risks related to lithium-ion batteries. What do you think is a reasonable trade-off?
