Cherokee County School District’s middle school STEM exploratory courses and Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services are celebrating five years using UL Research Institutes’ Xplorlabs safety science education platform, a partnership that brings the science of fire directly into the classroom.

The innovative program for eighth graders began in 2021 when Cherokee County educators and fire service personnel were introduced to Xplorlabs’ Science of Fire Forensics. This open-access learning pathway features online resources, interactives, and hands-on investigations that introduce students to the scientific principles behind fire investigation and prevention.

Since its launch, the STEM exploratory program has engaged thousand of students in hands-on investigations that explore the science of fire: how they start, spread, and are investigated with Xplorlabs.

Through this partnership, students also gain exposure to careers in the fire service, engaging with local fire professionals, while learning the importance of fire safety and prevention, as well as the science behind it. By combining STEM concepts with real-world applications, the partnership helps students see how science and technology are used every day by emergency responders.

The program continues to grow through the dedication of both educators and firefighters. On August 6, 2026, the newest group of Cherokee County firefighters received Xplorlabs training at the CCFES Training Center in Holly Springs, Georgia. The session was led by Kara Reeder, STEM teacher at E.T. Booth Middle School and an Xplorlabs Educator Fellow, who helped prepare firefighters to support and deliver the Science of Fire Forensics in local classrooms.

As the partnership marks its fifth year, Cherokee County Schools and Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services remain committed to inspiring students through engaging STEM education while building awareness of fire safety and career opportunities in public service. Together with Xplorlabs, this partnership continues to create meaningful learning experiences that connect classroom lessons to the community and prepare students for real-world future success.
