Context

Justin Guida is a K-8 educator at Southwark School in the Philadelphia School District who specializes in STEM. In this unit, students investigate the science of fire safety and explore architectural/engineering design principles in order to mitigate the structural and safety risks of residential fires. He hopes this lesson inspires a heightened sense of situational awareness in his students, while challenging them to apply systems thinking and foundational physical science concepts to solve complex, real-world problems.
